January 2011, A Fresh New Beginning
Happy 2011 to all of you!

I feel that 2010 came and went in the blink of an eye.  It was a year filled with great joy, accomplishments, loads of Yoga, new friends, and great challenges - a year that inspired me to find balance and strength within myself.  I was able to experience the power of deep love, gratitude, and the strength of human spirit as I said goodbye to my dear granny.

For me 2011 arrived charged with the promise of opportunity and a series of resolutions that require me to value every moment.

My teacher once said:

"Time carries a promise: to inspire you to perform actions that lead to a life that is full of purpose"

Every moment is an invitation to embrace life more fully.

This month the focus in my yoga practice and teaching is "Anchor the Power of Resolution".  We'll be looking at ways in which Yoga asana can help us focus our energy and develop our strength so that we are able to keep our resolutions.

This is a very exciting year, packed with opportunities to deepen our Yoga practice and understanding.  In January Noah Maze, one of the great Anusara Yoga Teachers,  will be in Dublin teaching Workshops and Part I of the Anusara Immersion.  Following with Immersion Part II and III later in the Year with Betsey Downing and Deb Neubauer.

I am delighted to announce that I will be teaching for two weekends (March & May) and two full week long retreats (August & September) at the Burren Yoga Retreat in the west of Ireland. Dates and more info below.

Frank and I will take turns teaching a Saturday morning Class at Open Mind Yoga called "Progressive Expansion Series" to help your yoga expand into new possibilities.

And there are many more exciting events!  Including a 2 hr UNICEF fund raiser class for  "World Yoga Day" on January 30th at Open Mind Yoga!

We are back teaching weekly classes, starting Friday with "Celebration of the Heart" at Yoga Dublin Studios.

Looking forward to seeing you all very soon and may you have a full and prosperous year!

Love,
Kanta

Goddess Kali: Vanquishes our Fears & Opens Our Hearts to Grace

September 23rd, 2010

This month we are focusing on how we cultivate and embody Kali energy in our Yoga asana practice.   We’ve looked at the experience of raw power and actual physical effort that we have to put into practice.  Then applied this raw power into practice with the intention of service to the highest- to have the experience of deep contentment and wellbeing to uplift ourselves and those around us as well.

This week we are looking  at Kali in relation to the first Chakra. The Muladhara Chakra, or Root Chakra, as it is considered to be the hub of Kali energy. It’s located at the base of the spine and the pelvic floor. It represents security, safety and primal need for survival.  When the energy is blocked or unbalanced we tend to feel anxious, fearful, insecure and frustrated.   It also governs hips, legs and low back.

My dear Grandmother is very ill at the moment; she is really at the end of her life.  The thought of loosing her arises a lot of sadness and  fear.  Ultimately a reality that I know, and is very dear to me is about to change.  Through my meditation and yoga practice I have been able to work through this fear and go a little deeper into the root- and every time I experience a deep sense of love and gratitude that comes with the understanding that I’m really not “losing” anything. I’m only evolving and learning more about myself, becoming more skilled on how I relate and react to a challenging situation.

Energy doesn’t die it only transforms, and it will keep on transforming But am I learning something of value? Is this situation opening my heart to Grace?

By being mindful and constant in my practices I can actually translate this experience into actions that allow me to be very steady and strong so that I’m able to support others in my family and behave in a way that honours the life of my very wise, steady and loving Granny.

In a story the Goddess Kali defeats the Demons  Shumba and Nishumbha in a fierce battle. These demons represent the forces of attachment that are source of pain that keep us bound to our limitations and fearful to face change and transformation.

Baba Muktananda always said that we should think our death every day.  This practice does put things into perspective. Everything that we do right now is extremely important and relevant. By thinking and living this way I feel that I honour the precious gift of life.  By courageously facing our fear of death and loss suddenly the fear disappears. In my experience, this is the spirit of Kali, she vanquishes our fears and opens our hearts to Grace.

So for our practice we will focus on powerful hip openers, and twist moving from a space of Grace. We’ll put into practice the 2 of the universal principles of alignment (Inner Spiral and Outer Spiral) to find the midline or core in the pelvic region.  We will root, ground, and secure our foundation and pelvis in order to courageously extend beyond our limitations.

Anusara Universal Principles of Alignment:

Open to Grace:  Courageously opening our bodies, minds   and spirit to transformation.

Inner Spiral/ Outer Spiral:  The play of Expansive and  Contractive energies to find the midline in the core of the pelvis.

Steady foundation and strong legs will help us to find freedom in the pelvic region and torso.

"In Celebration of The Heart"- The Godess Kali: The Raw power of Transformation

Goddess Kali: Raw Power of Transformation

I am delighted to have the opportunity to restart the “In Celebration of the Heart” series of classes.   It’s been an incredible summer filled with learning, challenges, inspiration, changes, lots of growth and so much Grace!

I had the opportunity to travel and spend time with John Friend to Paris and London and we had an incredible culmination of his European Tour here in Ireland.   I was yet again humbled and deeply moved as I was reminded of how blessed and fortunate I am.  I am eternally grateful to my dear teacher t Gurumayi  and the Siddha Yoga  teachings for infusing my everyday with purpose  and a deep longing to stay true to my Heart so that the experience of Highest form of Love is reflected  in  every  aspect in my life.    I am also very grateful to John and the Anusara Yoga System for making very profound teachings and Yoga practice accessible and relevant to all.

One of the highlights during the trainings with John was to learn to physically incorporate the energy of the Goddess, Supreme Shakhty, into my Yoga Practice.  Shakhty is the power of creation, the divine cosmic energy that projects, maintains and dissolves the entire Universe.  We specifically looked at the manifestations of Shakhty as the Goddess’ Kali,  Saraswati and Lakshmi.

I wanted to start this series of classes with the Goddess KALI: The Raw Power of Transformation. She is known to be dark and fierce.  Kali is the power of destruction and creation- She is known to be the one who is called upon by other gods and deities to destroy all demons.  Kali is sometimes compared and described as a black hole and swallows entire galaxies into darkness and nothingness. She is the Power of Time that Devours All.  Kanga, Himachal Pradesh, an 18th century scholar wrote the following.

Kali, annihilation aspect of Shakhty, standing on Rate and Kama,
who personify the primordial desire which gives rise to all creation.
The garland of human heads symbolizes wisdom and power. Her
blood-red tongue signifies the power of Raja-guna, the kinetic force
which gives impetus to all activities.
severed head are the symbols of dissolut
The sacrificial sword and the ion and annihilation directing
the Sadhaka to shed his 'ego sense'. The girdle of severed hands signifies
one's Karma, action.

In my contemplation I have the experience and see that Kali is also the purest expression of Love.  It is said that once Kali destroys your deepest fears she transforms a loving and nurturing Mother.

So, I as I was preparing for this class I realized that 90 minutes was never going to be enough.  We could spend a lifetime studying and trying to understand and embody the virtues and qualities of Kali.  So this is the 1st of four “In Celebration of the Heart” classes that focuses in Kali.

Love is the ultimate power of Transformation, Kali is Love.  But in order to have the experience of deep Love in our lives, we need to slash our demons- address the negative tendencies and habits that keep us from experiencing freedom and bliss.

The Shiva Sutras Say:

YOGAS CITTA VRITTI NIRODHAH

The restraint of the modifications of the mind-stuff is Yoga.

The energy of Kali, has the power to dissolve this so called “modifications of the mind-stuff”.  When we align ourselves to this energy there is no room for the ego and its very many mood swings.

Before Yoga Practice:

Identify the power of Kali within yourself. It helps me when I think and feel the power of intention, will power, and passion for what is important for you in your life. Perhaps the primal instinct and desire to protect your loved ones at all cost.

Universal Principles of Alignment

-          Open To Grace – Open to the experience of the Goddess Kali.

-          Muscular Energy Foundation filled with intention and Purpose

  1. Raw Power in Hands and feet
  2. Shins In- Thighs out- engaging  the inner edges of the legs
